PARTICIPATE IN UNICEF PROJECTS



The Psychological Effects of the Tsunami on Children (UNICEF)

 
 

The HELP Department of Psychology, with funding from UNICEF, visited the tsunami affected sites in Kedah, Malaysia, to perform a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) psychological assessment of the children in the affected area. The team has made several recommendations on various intervention strategies to improve the psychological well-being of the affected community. The team is working with Dr Hj Ahmad Rashidi, Head of the Psychiatric Unit in Hospital Alor Setar, to carry out the necessary interventions.

THE School Bully Prevention Project (UNICEF)
   

Both physical and social bullying can be devastating to a youth's psychosocial development.
A team of HELP psychologists headed by Professor Noran Fauziah Yaakub, Fatimah Haron, Lee Jue Ying, Gerard Louis, and Dr Goh Chee Leong will be introducing a school level intervention plan designed to reduce the occurrences of bullying.The team is working with UNICEF and the Malaysian Ministry of Education on this project.

The Mentoring Malaysia Project (ARCCADE-UNICEF)

Mentoring Malaysia is the latest collaboration among undergraduate youth in working to improve the social and emotional well-being of Malaysian teenagers. An after-school Positive Youth Development (PYD) programme, Mentoring Malaysia is a pilot study in public schools to address the statistics that 28% of Malaysian children struggle with mental health issues. This effort provides positive people, places and opportunities in promoting PYD through two types of activities, WildTeens and KidsAct. The Mentoring Malaysia team involves Dr Brendan J Gomez, Patricia Ang, Jasmeen Chowdhury, Lenny Lim, and a dedicated team of volunteers and interns.

The Positive Discipline Research Project (UNICEF)

In collaboration with UNICEF, the Department of Psychology is involved in a research project that aims to promote positive discipline techniques in schools and to eradicate the use of corporal punishment as a means of responding to negative behavior among students in Malaysian primary and secondary schools. The team, consisting of Dr Goh Chee Leong, Professor Dr Noran Fauziah Yaakub and Puan Fatimah Haron, hopes to produce a white paper for the Malaysian Ministry of Education which would propose methods of discipline based on theories of Positive Psychology.

Teacher Training in Bully Prevention (UNICEF)



This ongoing project is a joint effort involving the HELP Faculty of Bahevioural Sciences, UNICEF and the Malaysian Ministry of Education. Based on evidence gathered by a team of researchers from the Faculty, a team of writers, led by Professor Dr Noran Fauziah Yaakub, is producing a Manual on Bullying Prevention which would be adopted by the Ministry of Education and disseminated to all schools in Malaysia by the end of 2009. Puan Fatimah Haron is also a member of the research and writing team.
