Brief Overview

The Department of Management & Economics is responsible for the administration and teaching of HELP economics and economics related degree programs, such as Bachelor of Economics (Hons) and Bachelor of Management (Hons), as well as the University of East London '3+0' degree programs. The UEL 3+0 programs are Bachelor of Arts Business Studies (Hons) and Bachelor of Arts Accounting and Finance (Hons). The department’s teaching staff are also actively involved in the University of London External Programmes conducted by the HELP Academy. The Department is the largest centre for the teaching of the University of East London and the University of London external programs in Malaysia.

A variety of teaching and learning pedagogies are employed to create a program of study which is interesting and which brings out the excitement of studying economics, management and other disciplines. All the degrees provide a broad framework of intellectual pursuit and training. Students will learn how to analyse, critically evaluate, debate and present their ideas effectively using proper communication and writing skills.

A group of highly qualified and committed academicians – PhDs and Masters degree holders from renowned universities such as Edinburg, London, Melbourne, Oxford and Malaya – lead the Faculty. The Faculty members have diverse exposure in a wide range of disciplines, with many years of combined experience in the public and private sector, thus ensuring the quality of teaching is maintained at a high level.

Guided by HELP University College’s mission statement – to be the leading and the most successful education institution in fulfilling the educational needs and aspirations of Malaysians – the Department of Economics plays an integral role in this respect. It aims to fulfil HELP University College’s philosophy of ‘Pride of Achievement’, ‘Sharing Success’, and ‘The Courage to Be‘, To be Compassionate’ and ‘To be Significant’.

Besides academic pursuits, the Department emphasises the cultivating of leadership qualities and broadening students’ mental horizons. This is achieved through students’ participation in a variety of co-curricular activities and more prominently, in the industrial placement programs. This explains the consistent appeal of our degree programs to students and prospective employers.

The Department emphasises a ‘partnership’ relationship between students and the Department. The common goal is obvious:

to give students an educational experience that is all-rounded and enriching, and which will fulfil their career aspirations.
