Center for Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is a rapidly evolving discipline that draws from genetics, molecular biology, computer science, information technology, mathematics and statistics. It is aimed at the development of technologies for storing, extracting, organizing, analyzing, interpreting and utilizing biological information. Bioinformatics has come to prominence with the need for analysis of the huge amounts of data generated by genome projects and post-genomic research in molecular biology. This explosion of biological information has led to a growing need for individuals able to understand the languages of both biology and computer science. These bioinformaticians tend to find employment quickly from both the industry such as pharmaceutical companies and academia

Our aim at the Centre is to support the students by organising for them series of workshops, seminars and industrial visits that focuses on bioinformatics and its related fields. Students will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge thus allowing them to be prepared for their second and third year at University of Queensland. Students will also have the opportunity to participate with on going research activities with lecturers specialising in the bioinformatics field
