FLINDERS UNIVERSITY – A BRIEF BACKGROUND (information adapted from www.flinders.edu.au)

Since being established in Adelaide in 1966, Flinders University has become well-known for innovative research, high quality teaching and community engagement. Flinders University has attracted students from over 100 countries, with more than 50 different Bachelors courses and many opportunities for post-graduate studies.

Flinders’ graduates were ranked ahead of all interstate and other South Australian University graduates in terms of the overall quality of graduates (GES 2008).  Of all Flinders bachelor degree graduates who were seeking employment in 2009, over 90% were employed within four months of completing their degree (AGS 2009).  80% of bachelor degree graduates indicated that the skills and knowledge acquired during their Flinders degree was of importance to their main paid job (AGS 2009). In addition to this, Flinders is recognised regularly in national Teaching Awards, most notably in 2004 and 2005 when Flinders staff won the Prime Minister’s Award for Australian University Teacher of the Year.

Flinders fosters strong links between teaching and research, consistently ranking among Australia's top universities on a per capita basis for research spending, and for the citation of our work in professional journals.  The School of Psychology hosts internationally renowned researchers in fundamental and applied areas of human cognition, including areas as diverse as autism, brain function in psychopathology, decision making, eating disorders, eyewitness memory, human adaptation throughout the lifespan, social justice, trauma reactions, and sleep disorders. The success of Flinders’ staff is evidenced by the volume of publications in peer reviewed, high impact international journals; success in obtaining competitive grant funding from peak research funding bodies such as the ARC and NHMRC; PhD completion rates; local and national teaching awards; and the involvement of staff on the editorial boards of major international journals.
