Brief Overview

This program aims to provide a broad understanding of business and management and to develop skills which are useful in the business world. Business modules are extremely diverse and studying business should be seen as providing a broad undergraduate education. Business Studies is a multi-disciplinary field of study, drawing as it does on academic disciplines as wide-ranging as Law, Computing, Economics and Sociology. It covers a range of management specialisms, too, including Marketing, Personnel and Accounting.

Business Studies should not be seen as ‘how to run a business’ course, although the knowledge and skills gained are very useful in running a business. In seeking an understanding of business in all its variety and complexity, Business Studies provides a challenging area of study which focuses not just on the internal operations of business but also on the social, political, economic and legal environments within which business operates. Many modules in the area deal with controversial aspects of business, concerning social, economic and environmental consequences of particular business practices and approaches. As such they will appeal to anyone who seeks to understand and evaluate the place of business and management in the contemporary world.

Besides business core modules, options selected for the degree in HELP shall focus on:

Global Businesss: The increasing globalisation of business has created a strong demand for managers who can combine a broad range of managerial knowledge and skills with the ability to function effectively in a global business environment. With this need in mind, this focus offers students the opportunity to study business modules with a distinct international focus.

Marketing: This focus gives students an understanding of various aspects of consumer and buyer behaviour. Students will be able to study units such as Fundamentals of Marketing, Marketing Management and Consumer Behaviour and Research. This focus is particularly appropriate if students intend to make marketing their career.

Human Resource Management: This focus is on the current methods, processes and perspectives relating to HRM, as well as how to manage and enhance the potential of a diverse work force.

Business Finance: This focus enables the student to understand the finance side of business. Students will be able to take units like Fundamentals of Managerial Finance, and Corporate Financial Management.
