Brief overview

HELP has administered the University of London (UOL) International Programmes since 1986. The Programmes were detached from the Department of Economics in September 2008 to become an independent entity under the jurisdiction of HELP Academy. Henceforth, this new entity is known as the Department of UOL International Programmes.

In collaboration with University of London, United Kingdom, the Department offers five undergraduate degree courses to students as shown below:
•    BSc Accounting & Finance
•    BSc Economics & Management
•    BSc Economics
•    BSc Banking & Finance
•    BSc Business

The Department is chaired by Dr.Chin Kwet-Hon, PH.D with a supporting team of academics and administrators.  Many academics have long years of professional and teaching experiences in the UOL International Programmes  and five of them are holders of Ph.D degrees from established universities while others hold Master’s degrees. All UOL programme lecturers and administrative staff are caring, approachable, and supportive. Academics also provide coaching/mentoring, and counseling services to students when needs arise.

All academics are granted the privilege of owning a conducive and comfortable office room which they may use for consultation purposes for students. Generally, academics have fixed consultation hours for students. They are also provided with a personal computer for teaching and other related conveniences.

The administration of the Department is immensely facilitated by the help and services of two experienced administrators who also actively participate in student counseling, HELP Open Days, educational fairs, and school visits apart from executing normal administrative duties in the Department. Both staff are holders of certificates/qualifications from recognized tertiary institutions.

The Department has a printing machine for internal printing needs. Academics have direct access to the machine for printing handouts, lecturing notes or materials related to their lecturing duties.  Departmental meetings are conducted in a spatial meeting room which is also used for lecturing/tutorial classes when needs arise. To enhance the quality and efficiency of teaching, all academics are provided with a personal computer to suit their lecturing needs and workplace conveniences. Currently, the Department is planning to introduce e-learning devices to help enhance the quality and efficiency of teaching.

A scheme to establish a mini departmental library specifically to address the needs of managing the International Programmes is under way.  It is anticipated that major/core texts prescribed by University of London in the subject guides be acquired and added to HELP Academy’s main library collection for student reference and use in supplement to the library facilities and resources which University of London generously grants students direct access.  Another scheme the Department intends to introduce is the decoration of the walls within its premises with photos of successive badges of UOL Programmes. A 'Wall of Fame' would be specifically reserved for graduates who achieved First-Class Honours in their studies. Photos which recorded particular moments of joys and celebrations captured during major events/activities organized by the Department such as the UOL Night Dinner are also to be given prominent space for public display.

To help enhance students’ learning and life experiences throughout the course of their study at HELP Academy, the Department actively seeks to promote non-academic recreational activities with the aim to extensively involve students, academics, and departmental administrators to inculcate feelings of closeness and sharing among all of them. The ultimate goal is to achieve a collective sense of identification with the Department, HELP Academy, and HELP.

The Department of UOL International Programmes is located on Floor 2, Block E, Damansara Pejabat Kompleks, Jalan Dungun, Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In line with the objective of London’s course designs, the Department strongly emphasizes the need to foster students’ thinking abilities in their learning processes, not their abilities to memorize events or ‘facts.’ This is to encourage students to develop skills required for critical thinking and the analyses of social phenomena, as well as to develop skills in identifying and resolving problems independent of the help of others.  Thus, students are trained to actively involve themselves in classroom learning and debates throughout their course.

To help facilitate effective teaching/learning processes, the Department strives to stress the importance of building trust-based relationships between students, academics, and departmental administrative personnel. The Department strongly believes that meaningful interactions between all members of the UOL programme community at HELP Academy can take place only when members of the community are able to develop warm respect and solid trust for one another. Thus, the Department vigorously strives to inculcate this core value among all members of the UOL community in HELP Academy.
