Internship Experience

Reneeta Mogan Naidu, Bachelor of Psychology 3rd year student

Intern at Johnson & Johnson

"I decided to put my studies on hold for 2 semesters to intern for Johnson & Johnson because opportunities like these do not come very easily. As a result, I have learned a lot about Talent Management, as that is my job scope, about leadership as well as other admin related information which will definitely be useful when I start working after I graduate. I would definitely recommend students to join an internship before graduating because it gives you a sense of what to expect in the working world. It also provides a lot of exposure to people of different stature. The most important thing about internships is really the experience and the network that you can build while you are in the company which will be very useful in the future."

Amritaraj Kaur, Bachelor of Psychology 1st year student
Intern at Agathians Shelter Home

"The reason I chose Agathians Shelter Home was because I plan to further my education in Child Psychology. Therefore, this is the perfect place for me to gain experience and learn about children. This internship has impacted my life tremendously and left me with so many lessons to think about. It is amazing how these children, despite living with so little, are always so enthusiastic and have so much to teach. Many things that I learnt in Psychology came in handy during this internship. For instance, I was able to anticipate the children's behaviour towards certain actions and situations and understand why the children reacted in a certain way sometimes. Thus I was able to handle situations better. Overall, the experience at Agathians Shelter Home was very fulfilling and has enhanced my knowledge and understanding in many aspects."

Chong Yee Chiek,
Bachelor of Psychology 1st year student
Intern at Persatuan Kesedaran Komuniti Selangor (Empower)

"I chose to intern at Persatuan Kesedaran Komuniti Selangor (Empower) because it is a non-profit organization and its mission is great and meaningful. Empower is an organization that advocates for human rights, gender equality, women and youth participation in national development as well as democratic governance. As an intern, I was trained to assist in programmes organized by the organization, such as contacting media for publicity and hotel reservation, gathering information and materials for workshops, doing translation for articles and so on. I also had the opportunity to attend events such as Human Rights Talk at UCSI, Annual Report Launch by Suaram and HIV/AIDS Training Programme for Deaf Women.

The internship experience at the organization was eye-opening and quite delightful as I was given much freedom and trust to execute my tasks. My greatest satisfaction was being a reporter at the HIV/AIDS Programme where I had to write a detailed report of the programme and give positive comments for it. What I learned from the people in the organization was valuable as they demonstrated what they stand for. I have gained more awareness towards current issues our nation is facing and that we should and can contribute to make positive changes. I now realized that it is important to believe in myself and have positive views in life."

Debbie Yeoh Pei Ling,
Bachelor of Psychology 2nd year student
Intern at Tenaganita Sdn. Bhd.

"I chose Tenaganita as the place for my internship because I wanted to learn more about organizations that fights for migrant workers’ rights. I sat in on a few cases involving families who have been separated ever since leaving their home country but could not reunite because of laws, quotas and the number of cases handled by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). From this, I was able to acquire some knowledge about how an NGO works, who are usually involved in solving a case and the processes of handling a case. Highlights for me include the opportunity to attend the launching of SUARAM’s Malaysia Human Rights Report 2008 at Mandarin Court Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and the chance to visit the Karen community at Jalan Alor, which is one of the many communities in Myanmar. As a Psychology student, we are trained to be able to help people in the future and while I was at Tenaganita, to be able to talk to the people who were in need and help them was really a rewarding experience."

Choo Kok Wui, Bachelor of Psychology 3rd year student
Intern at GE

"I chose GE as it was a prestigious organization that recognizes the need to be able to attract and groom talents into leaders. From this internship, I was able to work under the third largest company in the world and learn how to manage such a huge company. Working under the legal counsel as a psychology graduate did not hinder me from performing. Moreover, it helped me to broaden my horizons and learn more skills that are important for my future. I would like to urge my fellow course mates to seize the opportunity to not only learn skills for work, but also skills for life."

Kok Mun Yee, Bachelor of Psychology 3rd year student

Intern as Research Assistant at CAREERsense@HELP, under Dr Mustafa

"I have a passion in psychometric testing which is why I chose to do my internship with Dr Mustafa. Dr Mustafa is a very good supervisor. Throughout the internship period, I get the opportunity to assist Dr Mustafa in work related to psychometric testing. I get to experience what a psychometrician does for their work. I get to assist in constructing a scale for testing, conducting item analysis and factor analysis on the data available. These practices have greatly enhanced my knowledge in research methodology and helped me tremendously in my thesis."

Jasmin Marie Vincent,
Bachelor of Psychology 2nd year student
Intern as UNICEF coordinators, HELP Department of Psychology

"I was involved in the Positive Discipline project which is a joint collaboration between UNICEF and HELP University College. There are few reasons why I chose to intern for UNICEF. Firstly, UNICEF is a very well established organisation. Secondly, the project that I was working on which is Abolishing Corporal Punishment in school was very interesting. I feel most satisfied when the workshops that we conducted ends up successfully, which made the hard work that we put in the preparation for the event worthwhile. From this, I have learned event management skills; how to write proposals, designing templates, being punctual to work and how to work effectively in a team. Apart from this, I have also learned from my superiors how to be more organized and how to work within a budget, which is extremely important in the working world. With the knowledge that I have in Psychology, I am able to socialise with any group of people. Lastly, I would like to say that I had a great time as an intern and I would like to thank my superiors and the CareerSense Department at HELP for giving me such an opportunity to learn."
